Why does Steam take so long to download games? Update Cancel. Why does steam take so long to start? Steam can be slow downloading games due to a poor disk-write speed, you having poor internet or most commonly, due to the steam servers being overloaded. The best way to get around steam servers being uploaded is to switch your download.
As far as I know, disk fragmentation is when a file or program is written onto a hard drive with gaps in between the data. This means that it will take longer to read the data because the hard drives 'head' has to move farther.
Say I try to download 2 steam games at once. Steam will 'allocate the disk space' for both games. As far as I know this will create a kind of partition on the drive for that game and only use it for that particular game. So, if steam made 2 of these 'partitions' for my 2 games, what would happen if I let game 1 download halfway, paused it and downloaded game 2, and then finish downloading game 1? Would it cause fragmentation or do these separate 'partitions' on the drive prevent that? Thanks!

One user recommends adding a free game like Dota 2 or Team Fortress 2 to your queue if you don't own a second game on your account.

The other, more commonly-suggested fix is to swap your Steam Region. As far as anyone can tell, it's only some of the servers in the United States having problems currently. If you go under the Steam menu to Settings, then Download settings, you should be able to switch to a more exotic locale. For instance, I am currently downloading the rest of Tesla Effect from Sweden.
And that's it. Hopefully the problem will be fixed soon, but until then you might as well give these temporary fixes a shot. Best of luck.
